Privacy Policy

What this policy covers
This policy explains how Believer Entertainment, Inc. ("Believer," "we," "us") handles personal information collected through playtest.believer.gg and the playtest application form it links to, where you can apply to take part in a pre-release playtest of our game.
It covers this site, the application form, and the emails and web pages we use to run the playtest program, for example your invitation and your Steam key page. It does not cover the game itself. If you are selected, we will give you a separate privacy policy covering what the game collects, and you will see it before you install anything.

You must be 18 or older
This site and our playtests are for people aged 18 and over. Please do not apply if you are under 18. If we learn that someone under 18 has applied, we will delete their application.
What we collect
When you apply
The application form is hosted by Alchemer. When you submit it, we receive:

From Steam
We use your Steam ID to query Steam's developer API. We use it to confirm the account exists and read its public display name, to read your game library and playtime, and to check whether your account already holds a key for our game.
We use the library and playtime data to understand your play history when we are selecting participants, to confirm that a key we issued was activated, and to manage keys we have issued or revoked.
Reading your library requires your Steam profile to be public, which is why the application asks about it. If you make your profile private after applying, we may not be able to complete these checks, and that may affect whether we can issue or manage a key for you.
We do not log in as you, and we do not see anything your account does not make available to us.
Automatically, when you visit the site
Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes your IP address and browser details to deliver the site and protect it from attacks and bots. Our traffic analytics, also provided by Cloudflare, record which pages were viewed, how you arrived, and the type of browser and device, without cookies and without identifying you by IP address.
When you submit the application form, Alchemer records your IP address and browser details with your response. We remove them when we import your application.
When we email you
Whether the message was delivered, bounced, was reported as spam, or you unsubscribed.
About the friends you tell us about
If you give us Steam profile links for friends, you are giving us personal information about other people. We use those links only to try to match applicants who want to play together, and only against people who have applied themselves. We do not contact anyone based on a link you provide, and we do not build a profile of them.
If a link you give us does not match an application from that person, we delete it within 30 days. If you gave us someone's link and they would rather we did not have it, either of you can email privacy@believer.gg and we will remove it.
Please only share a friend's profile link if you have told them you are doing it.
Why we use it, and our legal basis

Applying is voluntary, and so is answering any individual question. Questions marked optional have no effect on whether you are selected.
We only email you about your application and the playtest. We do not add you to a newsletter or send you marketing.
How we decide who to invite
A person on our research team decides who is invited.
Software helps our staff sort applications. It flags duplicate submissions from the same email address or Steam account. We also use an AI model provided by Anthropic to summarize application responses and to group applicants into cohorts for testing sessions. The model receives your answers without your name, email address, Steam ID or Discord username, keyed to an application number rather than to you. Anthropic does not use this data to train its models.
Nobody is rejected by an automated system, and no invitation is sent without a person choosing to send it.
What we do not do
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising as those terms are defined under US state privacy laws. We do not use it to build advertising profiles, we do not buy personal information from data brokers, and we do not make decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects without a person involved.

Valve is not our service provider. Your Steam account belongs to you and Valve, and Valve's own privacy policy governs it. We query Steam's API only for the purposes described above.
We also disclose personal information where we believe in good faith it is necessary to comply with the law or a lawful request, or to protect our rights or someone's safety. If Believer is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, personal information may transfer as part of that transaction.
Cookies
This site sets no cookies of its own and stores nothing in your browser.
Cloudflare, which protects the site, sets a security cookie called __cf_bm to tell people from bots. It is encrypted, expires after 30 minutes of inactivity, and is not used to track you across other websites. Our traffic analytics are cookieless and do not track you across other websites.
The application form is hosted by Alchemer and uses Alchemer's own cookies and Google reCAPTCHA to run the form and block spam. Alchemer's privacy policy describes those cookies.

We keep information longer only where the law requires it.
Your rights
Whatever jurisdiction you are in, you can ask us what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or get a copy. Email privacy@believer.gg. We verify that the request comes from the address it concerns, we do not charge for it, and we will not treat you differently for asking.
If you are in the EEA or the UK, you have the GDPR rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection to processing based on legitimate interests. You can withdraw consent at any time, which does not affect processing that already happened. You can complain to your national supervisory authority, or to the Information Commissioner's Office in the UK. We would appreciate the chance to sort it out first. We respond within one month, extendable by two further months for complex requests.
If you are in the United States, you have rights to know, access, correct, delete and obtain a portable copy of your personal information, and to opt out of sale, sharing and targeted advertising. We do none of those things. Where your state provides a right to appeal a decision on your request, our response will tell you how. Most US states outside California require our consent before processing sensitive personal data, and we treat that as the standard everywhere.
Where your information goes
We are based in the United States. Your application is stored with Cloudflare in its Western North America region. Copies are held by the providers listed above in the regions where they operate, which include the United States and the European Union. If you are outside those regions, your information will be transferred to and processed there.
For transfers out of the EEA or the UK we rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK International Data Transfer Addendum. Email us if you would like more detail about the safeguards in place.
Security
We protect your information with access controls, encryption in transit and at rest, and security review of the providers we use. Access to applications is limited to the people who need it to run the playtest, every access is logged, and staff sign in with company single sign-on and multi-factor authentication. Steam keys are encrypted separately and shown once. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your personal information we will notify you and the relevant regulators as the law requires.
Changes
We will update this policy as our practices change and post the updated version here with a new effective date. If you are invited to a playtest, you will receive a fuller privacy policy covering the game itself.
